Hi,
I have a similar workflow.

Import an development of the RAWs happens on a fast SSD, which has limited space.
Older projects are moved to a slower HDD as archive.

There are two levels to optimize:

1. Move all images from a folder to a new folder in the archive from WITHIN darktable. DT will remove the empty folder.

2. When accidently a folder is moved or renamed from outside DT, then the foldername in "collect images"/"folders" is stroked thru. There is a context (right mouseclick) "search filmroll" for a dialog to show DT the new location. This will heal the database-entries for all pictures in the folder.
