I've asked about that in the past. On this list, DT developers have repeatedly suggested to have backups of the XMP files in order to protect against database corruption. As a result of that, I do not include the database in my regular backups, but rather recreate it from the files. I have repeatedly done this when playing with different versions of DT. Also, creating backups of a large collection of mostly unchanged small files will be more space-efficient in the long run, than backups of a single huge ever-changing database file. Note however, that newer versions of darktable will rewrite existing XMP files created by older versions occasionally. I find these design choices quite unfortunate.
