Tese are images that are already in the db ... not newly shot. So there is both an established xmp and EXIF. I do not know which entry on either of the files to edit. I have tried editing the <datetime "new-time"> in the xmp and that does not appear to change anything.

I have a number of images where the 'datetiime' value is empty and as a
result they are out of sequence in a time sort. These images are mainly
composites, tiffs and other pieces that were manipulated in Gimp or
elsewhere.

Should I edit the data in the xmp or EXIF in order to make the correction?

Manjaro/Arch/XFCE ... running current git version.
if you will look at issues, I believe you will find a bug report about
this. I rename my files after transfer from cardreader to date-time shot
and can bypass this problem sorting on filename.
