Before considering a proprietary (Microsoft) filesystem like exFAT (or NTFS)
for interchangeability, you should also have a look onto UDF:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Disk_Format

Mostly known as a CD-RW/DVD-RW filesystem it ca be used on hard disks,
too! Its specs are open and in Version 2.01 it can be read/wrote by Linux,
MacOS, Windows (>Vista), NetBSD, and so on...

In fact, UDF is my main filesystem for USB-Sticks since a couple of years,
although I must admit I never used it on HDDs, where I usually prefer some
OS-native filesystems.
