Thank you Eric! In the end I suspect that the problem was related to my
laptop and some glitch... shame on me!
Today, after a reboot, I tried both v3.4.0~git15.b2a685928 (latest stable)
and 3.4.0-1.1 (latest release, that you suggested) and both work fine: the
bug I reported is not showing up. I ended up keeping the version you
suggested.

Sorry again to everyone for the false alarm!
