And from my experience: I did struggle at the beginning and prefered the
zones module for some time even I knew that it is _not_ recommended with
the scene referred workflow.
Only after I watched the "understanding darktable" video I realized that
I did not use the tone equalizer correctly before and now I find myself
in the same "switching situation" that you describe.
