I also have and frequently use a D500 and have experienced no difficulties
developing the pictures with darktable on openSUSE linux. and at
https://www.darktable.org/resources/camera-support/, the D500 is
recognized as supported with WB Presets and Noise Profile but no Custom
Matrix.
your difficulty is undoubtedly local.
same experience here with thousands of images.
What is the problem? Red-marked? Lens-correction module?
