yes sir.... the windows fix fixed it. in reality gimp wasn't installed
correctly. I had the flatpak version installed. I reinstalled the apt
version and everything was good after. the flatpak version was installed
from the ISO.
as for when told that my hdr method with gimp didn't work this is how you
do it:
pull the three exposures into gimp
open into layers (in this order) the dark exposure, medium, light
create grayscale layer mask On the layer mask increase both the brightness
and contrast. Save as a tiff then open in darktable and play with
whitebalance  and play with brightness (you might have to decrease it).
