Unfortunately, Ubuntu and Mint are going in the direction of flatpaks. I
dislike that. I go through the trouble of ensuring that everything on my
system is uptodate so that I get the very latest that darktable (or any
other software) has to offer, only to find that the flatpak is using an
older version of this or that library (or missing a library altogether).
E.g., I do not think that the Ubuntu flatpak has support for the AVIF
filetype.
I download the source and compile it. The { cmake ] process actually tells
you everything which is not uptodate, and why certain features may not
work. E.g., “libdav1d-dev ≥ 0.8.9 not found. Darktable will compile without
AVIF support.” (If any version was found, it will tell you what version was
found). In that case, install/update all the AVIF files, clear the build
directory, and run cmake again. It has come to pass, from time to time,
that my distro's repository does not have a recent enough version of a
library, and so I have to download, compile, and install (usually three
simple steps), the latest library then go back to the darktable compiling.
Flatpaks are supposed to solve that problem by having everything we need in
them, and all the right versions. In theory, that works. In practice, it
often does not.
Just compiled darktable version 4.0 today. Had to update my CLang from
version 13 to 14. (The cmake spat out a warning that darktable would
compile but without support for OpenCL). CLang 14 was in the repository,
so, not a problem. Did the CLang update with Synaptic. Darktable 4.0
compiled, and is working just fine, with OpenCL support.
Having compiled, and not used the flatpak, the directories you initially
mentioned would be where to look. With the flatpak, everything is expected
to be within the flatpak directories.
Sincerely,
Karim Hosein
