Well, I didn't do any hdr on that picture. Or do you say that the filter
works that way?

I agree that it has to be an artefact introduced by the filter, but I'm
not sure that it is an intended/known artefact nor do I understand where
it comes from.

Right, but the split is set to the right of the hill. I would expect
something like

filter, dark hard edge => darkend image
     ----------------------
     no filter effect

I get something like

filter, dark hard edge => darkend image
     ----------------------
no filter effect => original image
dark edge brightening up (not in the unfiltered image)
     no filter effect again

with ---- marking the split I set.

Yes, I took a picture where the problem is very appearent.

I find similar behaviour, but much less pronounced, also in other images
where I use e.g. the simulation of a 2ev soft edge grad. There it is
much less prominent and you'll have to look closely, and depending on
where you set the split, this "dark band" you get might well fall of the
edge of the picture (at least that was my current explanation for it's
dissapereance). However, I wonder why it shows up in the first palce.

Beyond the edge of course it is brighter. Maybe I do it the wrong way,
but usually if I try to hold a sky back I set the grad of dt to 8ev
hard, rotate and place the edge and then take back the strength and
soften the edge. I just juse the hard filter to set the angle properly.
I feel that's easier with a hard edge than with a soft one.
