Further research gives me the impression that the easiest way to get an
epub is to use the html-output of the manual. Something like this works
for me:
#!/bin/sh
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
cd $HOME/src/darktable/doc/usermanual
make darktable-usermanual-html
cd $HOME/src/darktable/doc/usermanual/html
ebook-convert index.html darktable.epub \
--title "Darktable Users Manual" \
--authors "Henrik Andersson" \
--pubdate 2012 \
--publisher "Darktable Project" \
--tags "Manual, Photo, Image processing, Raw development" \
--remove-paragraph-spacing \
--insert-metadata \
--linearize-tables \
--remove-paragraph-spacing-indent-size 0
This bases the resulting epub on the html manual. ebook-convert is part
of the free calibre package (http://www.calibre-ebook.com/)
