The Darktable programmers may find time to offer that capability, indeed
it may already be there but I do not see it, and there are many more
pressing tasks at hand. And there are several other means available to
accomplish your wishes.

Maybe you cannot, but....
Do not use dt to *import*, move files from camera to computer. exiftool
may be used to "move" files from one location to another location named by
creation-date of the photos and rename the files also, if desired.
>From exiftool man:
exiftool '-Directory<DateTimeOriginal' -d %Y/%m/%d dir
Move all files in "dir" into a directory hierarchy based on year,
month and day of "DateTimeOriginal". ie) This command would move
the file "dir/image.jpg" with a "DateTimeOriginal" of "2005:10:12
16:05:56" to "2005/10/12/image.jpg".
Then import to dt.
Appears exiv2 offers the same capability:
mv | rename Rename files and/or set file timestamps according to the
Exif create timestamp. The filename format can be set
with -r format, timestamp options are -controlled with
-t and -T.
I use a card-reader rather than depleting my camera bateries which are
rather expensive.
I adhere to the *nix philosophy, singular utilities excellently performing
specific operations rather than do-it-all programs which offer what *they
belive you need (windoz anyone). I use dt to refine my photos and save
them to more usable formats rather than as a file-manager, etc.
Dt accomplishes much but expect it to be expert at *developing*
photographs rather than at file manipulations, tagging and adjusting exif
information, ..... One of the *major* pluses for *nix systems is the
*many* ways to accomplish a task.
And you can completely script your photo import/hierarchy operations
providing consistancy.
