What is the exif data on the picture? The one from Darktable have a lot of high iso noise, and the other from Canon camera lacks detail.
I don't know your settings on the Canon camera but i suppose it's default? Default your Canon camera always remove iso noise from pictures when data from the camera sensor are saved as jpg. You have writting nothing about your settings in Darktable, but if you have not done this, try to switch on noise removal. Not related directly to your case but this could be interesting for you to know, since I also own a Canon 18 mpx camera: Personally I never get god enough results on high iso noise Canon pictures in Darktable. Only RawTherapee works for those. RawTherapee have 2 tools (Impulse noise removal and chrome/luminance noise reduction). They works well and are easy to understand. Darktable have equalizer, denoise (non-local means) and denoise (bilateral filter). The only tool which works for me is denoise (non-local means) when the Canon pictures have little iso noise (max iso 800-1600). Denoise (bilateral filter) remove to much detail and equalizer I don't understand after several months with Darktable. :) In RawTherapee it's like working in Adobe Lightroom. You turn on chrome and luma noise removal. If there are random noise left around you turn on impulse noise removal and voila picture is ready. This is so far my experience with noise removal in those two applications. These two tools are giving me the best result. Together they are better than Lightroom 3 and After Shot Pro in my experience. Ok, back to the main issue. Why not you post your raw file so we can work with it and find the best settings in Darktable? Then you can see how to achieve near to or better than camera jpg results. )-|algeir Den 13. feb. 2013 07:52, skrev Willem Ferguson: > Dear dt colleagues, > > I have run into similar problems in the past.
