This is the RAW file:

Taken using ISO 800 with a shutter speed of 1/2000 to try to balance
freezing the wings and still get adequate depth of field, whilst keeping
noise manageable. A compromise. This isn't completely achieved (the wing
tips are blurred and the forewing isn't great). I really want to use 1/4000
with ISO 1600, but the Nikon D300 doesn't give me acceptable results at ISO
1600.
My processing objectives then are to preserve the details of the veins in
the wing, whilst removing noise from the body and wings. The background can
be smoothed away completely.
So I selectively used G'MIC's anistropic smoothing on the background, the
wingtips and much of the forewing, and I used G'MIC's Octave sharpening
selectively on the hindwings central area (this includes the most important
veins for flight performance - identification isn't a problem for this
subject, but for some species it is important) and the abdomen and head.
probably using different parameters for the different parts - I don't
remember now.
The final result is:

Any suggestions on using blend-if to acieve similar results?
