Ah... I'm ambivalent about hearing that. Glad Darktable isn't the root cause... Sorry that your disk is dying... Since a few versions Ubuntu does SMART checking out of the box though... But it might require you to have SMART enabled in the BIOS, as it doesn't force it on. The 1.0.x series had a bug with JPEGs causing excessive memory usage, which I think got fixed in 1.1.x...
