high, thx for your analysis, i'll chip in a couple of technical comments
where they make sense there have been quite a few goot practical comments
so far

There is a technical reason for that separation. Generating images from a
RAW image is slow. Even on a powerfull computer it can take half a second
per image which is pretty bad from an UI-responsiveness point of view.
So the big difference is that DR mode always show you the real image
whereas LT mode is optimized for easy browsing. LT keeps a low quality
thumbnail of the image and never processes the image if the thumbnail is
availalbe (it can be the camera-generated thumbnails on unedited images,
this depends on your settings) DR will always give you the exact image, and
a new thumbnail is generated when you leave DR mode
Another way to understand the difference is that you can't zoom beyond
fullscreen in LT mode
