I hope I understand the problem below correctly and am not making myself appear foolish.
If the images are stored on an external server or NAS, it should be perfectly possible to keep the library file on the same external device that the images are stored on anyway. The complete collection would then be non-local, removing some of the risk of keeping it locally on a laptop. My collection is on an external drive with backup to a NAS. The important thing is to do file manipulations within dt so that the library can keep track of the locations of images and of some preference settings. For non-synchronous access to images by more than one computer the only requirement would be that both machines have access to the appropriate (centrally-located) library file. Using rsynch circumvents the file management book keeping within dt and does not update the library with respect to the locations of files. The use of rsynch is probably most efficient if the complete image collection is backed up, including the relevant library file. Recovery of the backed up collection would then probably require a restore to the folders that dt expects. Personally I do not find the limitations imposed by the library file so important. I have on several occasions inadvertently moved files outside of dt, thus causing the information in the library file to be incorrect. It is simple to rebuild the library. dt is much more flexible in this respect than some other software, e.g. digikam (which I frequently use). I am following this discussion with great interest.
