 The quick fix: shadows & highlights module and just have it boost shadows.
 The possibly better fix: the zones module. I've sometimes had better luck
with shifting some zones up.

 Both modules can use masks so if their un-masked operation affects
too much you can draw in a mask for just the faces (although this is
somewhat awkward, as always).

 There's also a 'fill light' module but I've never had any luck in using
it. 'Shadows & highlights' has always worked better for me.

 There are probably other options, especially if you want to dive into
parametric masks.

(Note that s&h can create a rather unnatural HDR-like look if you let
it, even at default parameters. I've made that mistake with several
pictures so these days I try to be careful, look at the result several
times, and generally turn down the settings.)
