There are some mock-up pages in dev-wiki where to start from:
http://darktable.org/redmine/projects/darktable/wiki/MetadataBrowserGui

I agree that any developer could be a potential darktable developer, but
here some consideration:

- we can create our branch to develop new features or a new metadata
management; but this branch could be accepted or refused from the main
developer team - yes, it exists :D

- imo we need to keep new features consistent with the rest of dt style.
So is important to talk with dt devs before start a new feature (dev
mailing list or irc)

- we are discussing in dt-users mailing list, but I think not all
developers read this ML. I know this is like a cross-topic, but imo
should be better move this thread in dev mailing list (if you want
discuss about develop new feature)

- of course someone could develop a new magic feature without devs
approval, free software permits this. But please try before another way ;)

In the past I raised the problem of poor tag management and I agree most
part of developer are interested about image processing (...dt is first
a raw development sw).
I think the main problem isn't find people who write code, but write a
good specification document/wiki to describe how to implement feature,
how to revamp the UI and how to manage metadata in dt database. And to
do this job a "normal user" is important like a "power developer". We
need also consider workflows are different so couldn't be easy find a
solution.

finally: +1 to try to write a white paper or to discuss about existing
dev-wiki.... Is the most important starting point :)
