Perhaps it is a kayboard command that is not obvious. Unles I missed it the
manual only talks about conditional blanding, not drawn masks. Is this
something not present in the OSX build perhaps?

Drawn masks have not been released yet in any stable version. You can find
them in unstable builds.

LR allows for brushes of varying size, "hardness", and opacity with which
you can paint on an adjustment. I.e. a contrast brush. This brings the user
experience much closer to a darkroom situation where you would burn and
dodge various parts of an image with different filters to achieve your
final print. I know the digital world is different than the analog darkroom
but it is actually a very nice experience and feels more interactive with
the image and process.
