Mathematically, there is a significant difference whether you apply
a gamma curve to RGB channels or Lab channels, no matter whether you
do the latter with auto chromaticity or not.  At the same time,
there is no objective argument why the base curve should yield a
more pleasing result than the tone curve.

However, the base curve works similar as the chemicals in
photographic film.  They, too, have a non-linear gamma-like response
curve.  And they, too, yield gray if all three channels are the
same.  This way, the base curve tries to meet our photographic
viewing habits.
