Well,  it turned out that I was using an USB3 port while my version of
libgphoto works fine only with USB2:

As you can read there:

We had an issue in the kernel and in libgphoto2 where on USB 3 ports
it would only take 1 connection and then hang (needed a replugging in).

libgphoto2 2.5.2 has fixed this.
