I see exactly the same problem Patrick, turn the "apply metadata on import" off (effectively meaning no tags are being applied) and I can import folders fine.
I also can import (as you suggest) using the "image" button and selecting all the images in the directory but then it seems that even if
"apply metadata on import" is turned on and multiple tags are specified these tags are not applied to the images. Anyone else seeing this problem?

Cheers

Just wondering if this was ever resolved? - I see exactly the same fault
here.

darktable-1.3_1291_g112f92f_git-2.1.TM.x86_64
openSUSE Tumbleweed

this version of darktable will import files, but does not import
directories. It appears to just sit there unresponsive. Starting
darktable from command-line provides no information other than:
   Lua enabled
Presently: darktable-1.3_1327_gf6d1ee8_git-2.1.TM.x86_64

And I still cannot import "folders". I have to open the directory and
select *all* images and import.

It *appears* to be related to tags set on import. I can import "folders"
if I only specify one tag and it can be quite long but rarely can I import
using >1 tag of any length.
