Thanks for the suggestion.
That command tells me to run kill -TERM <pid>
So I did and no dialogs appeared.
The application window just disappears and 'ps' confirms it's dead.
Same behaviour if I do this when the application is responsive.
kill -USR1 kills it but again no dialog.
kill -STOP does nothing.

There are two new problems now.
I reinstalled 1.4-rc1, from the same .dmg I used before,
selecting the 'replace' instead of 'keep both' option.
I created a new directory to import from and copied 10 new images
in that darktable has not seen before.

Problem 1.
I open DT and it shows me the last collection I was working on.
I select 'import folder' and pick the new folder.
Now the main window tells me there are no images in the folder I specified,
which is incorrect. Permissions are ok - world-readable.
The message exactly:

there are no images in this collection

if you hae not impoted any images yet
you can do so in the import module

try to relax the filter settings in the top panel
or add images in the collection module in the left panel

If I select import->image instead of import->folder,
and go into the new folder, then the dialog correctly
interprets the files there as images and displays a
thumbnail of any image that I select by clicking on it.
If I then hit 'open' it opens the image and displays it
correctly. And it names the collection with the name of
the new folder ('test', creative huh?).
An XMP file appears in the new folder for the image just loaded.
When I go back to the lighttable view it does not show a thumbnail,
just a grey square with 'NEF' in large friendly letters.

Problem 2.
When I try to exit darktable via <darkable menu>->Quit,
it iconises the application and does not quit.
When I reopen the icon by double-clicking, I get the beachball of death.

We're not going to get far with me describing this longhand.
If someone with a bit of dtrace-fu can give me a few spells
to try I'm happy to do that.

Cheers
Vince
