Yes I am aware of this. I use the version from the darktable PPA, so I have
all the latest stuff. Brush masks are good, but it's different from the
adjustment brush feature. I am aware that you can achieve similar effects,
but it's execution is different. In LR you select the area then select the
effects; in DT you select the effect then select the area. It's a different
way of doing things and is more flexible in the sense that you have more
control over what you do, but it's a lot slower for applying multiple
effects to an area.
For instance, I could be combining exposure shifts with a white balance
shift to simulate ambient lighting when dodging/burning. Or I could be
lifting shadows in a specific area while increasing noise reduction,
sharpening, contrast and local contrast there simultaneously (like for
rocks in seascapes). In DT you have to create multiple instances of each
module (if they are used for other parts of the photo) and then draw masks
for them (even if you can duplicate the masks it's still very slow).
In conclusion, I think darktable gets you there, but it is slower than
Lightroom in doing so (more steps required), though it does give a bit more
control.
