Yeah, this was changed between darktable 1.4 and 1.4.1.  In 1.4 you needed to 
enable it with a GUI option, in 1.4.1 it's
always enabled, and bound to ctrl-z by default.  You can discover this binding 
by going into the darktable preferences,
on the shortcut tab, under views->lighttable.

Could be worth adding that to the release notes for 1.4.1 or updating the blog 
post on it.

Try this:

Open the light table, click on an image that you want to start with, press and 
hold ctrl-z to see the preview with focus
detection.  Then use the mouse wheel to go forward or backward through your 
images in order to compare them.
