Canon does use (lossless) compression in their raw files and files can 
vary widely depending on the subject matter. Shoot an image with lots of 
blue sky and you will be amazed at just how small the raw data is. 
Looking at random in my files I see a 25% variation even in quite normal 
data sets.

Canon offers a 'safe average' value of file sizes to provide some sort 
of rough yardstick for fitting images onto a disk. Not to worry!!
