Thanks everyone for their input (and more welcome of course!). I will try out some of the suggestions. This will take a bit of time as I take a clonezilla image of my disk before I try out a new config and if it doesn't work, I roll back if things have got a bit too messy (sometimes my trackpad becomes inoperable).
