In my travels I carry an older lightweight 32 bit laptop on which I can at least make a provisional assessment of my images. Until now I have never really come to terms with the 'skulls' or the error message that tells me to "buy more memory or lower the threads" ..... I do have the maximum memory and my threads are set at the minimum value. So, what now?
Recently I determined that 'my' problem is not purely related to memory or threads but is also a more simple problem of setting a more compatible image size . My screen (on this laptop) is 1440 x 900. In theory if I go full screen and use tab I can display an image during processing at that full size. If I set that full screen size in the preferences my entire lighttable and darkroom will display nothing but skulls. My solution has been to set in the preferences a small 800 x 800 processing image size and to use the zoom to 1:1 for all critical adjustments. This gives me a clean running system (with some inconveniences but without the skulls). I hope this might assist others with the same problem.
