Nividia doesn't 'support' OpenCL that well especially on low cost cards like 
mine GT 640. Performance is in some cases (denoising with nlm) worser than on 
my i7-2600. You can have a look at 
https://compubench.com/result.jsp?benchmark=clb11 to compare the OpenCL 
performances. Today I would take an AMD card with > 2 GB RAM, an i7 and 16 GB 
of RAM.
 
I'm on Debian stable and that is fine, because you'll get backports of AMD and 
Nvidia drivers. darktable from GIT works well and AFAIK the developers take 
Debian stable as reference for the build dependices.
