Indeed, and tests I performed all suggest that my drives are actually 
working properly.
A test with copying the ubuntu iso for example shows no issue:

Downloads$ date;cp ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso 
ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso2;date
Wed Aug 13 22:21:53 CEST 2014
Wed Aug 13 22:22:04 CEST 2014

14 seconds to copy a file over twice the size of the database file would 
indicate another issue altogether, either something is causing a 
bottleneck in/during/shortly after logging in or there's something 
completely else going on
