you can change brightness/contrast, see settings->shortcuts->global
  f7, f8, f9, f10
settings are held in ~/config/darktable/darktablerc
I prefer:  ui_brightness=1
           ui_contrast=-0.05


also you can control colors, etc.  settings are held in
~/config/darktable/darktable.gtkrc
