re: tonal range. you need to adjust your development process (exposure,
curves, etc) to your liking. the hdr itself is just data with extended
dynamic range.

re: artifacts: the hdr merging code doesn't deal with moving objects. your
head (?) in the bottom right corner moves, that confuses the algorithm.
