If I understood correctly, (a), darktable will
use raw whenever available; (b), raw does not use
any particular color space, such that the meaning
of the color values is open to interpretation. (c)
darktable compares the raw files and the jpeg (at
least in some calibration run) to determine a base
curve aimed at fitting the raw data to the jpeg.
(d) darktable internally uses an independent color
space like XYZ or Lab.

If all this is correct, then import of the raw data
should reach almost immediately the internal
representation, such that each color has a very
well defined meaning.

Where does the input color space fit in here? Does
that make any sense with raw? Or should it only be
used for jpegs, which use a particular and known
color space, such that the trick fitting raw data
to some jpegs is unnecessary?

Yes. This is, what I would expect for one. But
exporting a collection for printing or web may be
onother reason to choose a different output color
space or profile (if it where for a particular
printer). Right?

Hm. Wouldn't you be looking at artifacts caused by
squeezing the huge Adobe RGB color space into the
tiny one of a normal desktop screen (unless you
have one of nice and expensive ones)? I would
expect this look to go away as soon as seen on
another computer or printed. Does this make any
sense?
