Hej Rob,
the warning about your identity you can safely ignore since you're not
going to publish this commit anywhere. To revert the commit, check the
outcome and then go back to your current status should work like this:
$ cd $HOME/darktable
# save uncommited changes you made to the code:
$ git stash
# revert the commit in question:
$ git revert f225278d7981fefdaf9ae1c205d33dbd06f619c1
# compile and check:
$ ./build.sh
$ darktable
# revert to the original state of your repository by
# a) remove the last commit (which is the "revert" commit):
$ git reset --hard HEAD~1
# call the uncommited changes from your stash:
$ git stash pop
# and there you are.
