In every raw file, there usually is an embedded low quality jpeg file
(that's the image that is shown on the camera screen as well).  By
default, that's the image that darktable will show you in lighttable
(until you start working on the raw file, I believe).  In the GUI
settings (the cogwheel in lighttable will get you there), there's a
toggle where you can decide to show the raw file instead (processed
through whatever default darkroom modules you have).

A note: showing the processed raw file is substantially slower.
