The need to reimport is very strange. Still don't know what's happening there.

Yeah, those settings are in the database.

Sure. Here's what you can do:

1) Select the set of images that need this fix in lightroom
2) Open one of them in darkroom and press the reset button in the
orientation operation
3) Go back to lightroom, select the same image and press the copy
button, select only orientation and uncheck all others
4) Press "paste all" to apply that to all images

That should reset any orientation settings. If you've rotated any
images you'll lose that, so you may need to check them again.

Please backup your library and xmp files in case anything goes wrong.
