A bit off-topic (not hardware), but since backups came up, I thought I'd mention dirvish. It's an rsync-based tool, can be used locally or remotely, and it can create a history of your file system - one backup directory per day. The trick is that is hardlinks unchanged files from one day to another, so there's no retransmit and no extra space is used. Restoring is very easy, since you can copy files directly from a previous day's backup directory to your live file system; I use it with a simple external USB drive. http://www.dirvish.org/
Any recommendations on cloud backup (for off-site storage)? I've tried Crashplan, but was not satisfied. It's not that the app is Java-based (I'm a Java developer so I have no bad feelings about Java), rather the way it's done (it just stopped working, for example, or it did not back up for a week or two - though it must be said that they were true to their word and they gave me a refund when I cancelled).
