I think there are more aspects to it.
On one side is user convenience: having all the controls in one place
certainly helps ease of use, as long as what you want to do can be
done using those controls.

On the other hand, I like DT's module-based approach because of the
flexibility it provides (multiple instances, especially when combined
with masks). Also, I think it mandates a well-defined module API which
should enhance code quality. As far as I know, RT is rather monolithic
in nature (e.g. when they found out that multiple RGB curves, each
applied with a different weighing mode help, they hard-coded another
RGB curve instead of creating an RGB module - which would have needed
a complete overhaul for a monolithic app). This is not to badmouth RT,
I think they are also a brilliant bunch who have given us a great tool
for no money. It's just a different approach, and no tool is perfect.

Loading an image with one of the presets shipped with each app, I
often find that RT does a better job 'out of the box' (the 'Skintones
- Natural' and 'Skintones - Natural TM' (tonemapped) presets are my
favourites); however, as soon as more than basic raw development
(selective edits etc.) is concerned, Darktable is the better tool.
