Hi,

you may also want to try out the new feature branch 
color_reconstruction. In that branch I added a proposal for a new module 
called "color reconstruction". It uses a bilateral filter to estimate 
the colors of overexposed highlights. Especially in the image that you 
supplied (the person wearing a wig) it does a really decent job.

I also integrated my extension to the shadows&highlights module to that 
branch. There is a new parameter "white point adjustment" that helps to 
bring the tonal range of overexposed areas into the printable range.

Both, module "color reconstruction" and module "shadows & highlights" 
work well together - you might need to fiddle a bit with the parameters.
