I assume you are right. I deleted the preset and recreated it being sure not to touch any control. I then deleted all of the xmp files, removed all the files from Darktable, and reimported them. The lens correction is now, err, correct. BTW, what does IOP stand for? I think it's such a shame I could not just 'change history' - change the focal length in the auto applied lens correction preset, because I'd made some other corrections to images before I noticed the incorrect lens correction. So I had to throw away my work. I think Darktable would be better suited to having effect layers rather than time based history. Anyway - that's off topic.
