Even with your proposal implemented, you can't rely on the existence of
the xmp to detect if iops (Image OPerations) have been applied to the
image in darktable or not. You can start your work on an image and then
reset them or discard even the default configuration. Is the unprocessed
raw (removed default modules) now a touched or an untouched raw?
To leave aside image operations, also stars, tags, labels, and all
(automatically) added metadata are stored in the xmp.

I avoided the phrase 'modified image' in favor of 'touched' as we are
speaking of raws here and the files are never modified.
