There is a shell script 'purge_non_existing_images.sh' in ./tools of the 
development branch. I don't know if and how it works. I guess it simple 
removes the db entries. So, please backup your db first if course! I also 
don't know if this clean your thumbnail cache. Maybe it can serve as 
starting point for a new script.
