Thanks for the suggestion. I deleted all those files. This time a dialogue box appeared saying "verifying darktable.app" which wasn't appearing before.
Unfortunately, no luck. The icon just bounces up and down in the dock. The Activity Monitor shows darktable as running, but nothing appears on the screen. I have to force quit darktable. It might be related to something else other than cache files. Anyway, at least I can launch darktable from the terminal.
