Create a new preset in that module with the module being turned off and make 
it auto-applied.

Yes, that's how it's supposed to work, resetting the history stack brings it 
back to the initial state, so all auto-applied presets are added again.

Did you remove the default modules (basecurve, sharpen) or did you leave them 
in the "(off)" state? The latter works for me.
