Hi,

to me it looks like the images use a clever management of local 
contrast, enhanced in some parts and reduced in others. This element 
gets combined with strong enhancement of one or two leading colors while 
desaturating all others (color key).

An example for local contrast adjustments with a step-by-step 
description can be found in the following forum article. It is in German 
but I hope you might still get the point. Basically I use the equalizer 
module in two instances and with drawn masks. One instance reduces local 
contrast (clarity) while the other enhances it:

For color key effects you have various options in darktable, e.g. the 
color zones module or a parametric mask combined with any module 
affecting color saturation.
