according to the man, this collects some processor hardware counters.
That sounds interesting but I'm planning to use a tool (Extrae) on it
and it already collects these counters.

This only exports a .raw file, doesn't it?

I was interested on exploring the performance of computationally
intensive functionalities at the beginning. Any suggestions on where to
start? Also, using lua scripting may sound interesting. I have skim-read the
   http://redmine.darktable.org/projects/darktable/wiki/LuaAPI
webpage, but I can't see how to apply some image transformations from
the darkroom (e.g. change color temperature or rotating the image). Is
this possible?

Thanks!
