Seems there must be a way on ubuntu to run an install/update/upgrade in a
test only mode. There you would be able to see required packages. I can
tell you how to do it with an rpm based system but I don't know ubuntu.
OK, thanks for the hint.

I tried the following:

  * I added the darktable unstable ppa
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmjdebruijn/darktable-unstable
  * I added the backports:
      ~ $ sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.bak
      ~ $ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
    trusty-backports main restricted universe multiverse" >>
    /etc/apt/sources.list'
  * I checked the repositories:
    ~ $ inxi -r
    Repos: Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
                ...
    deb http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty-backports main
    restricted universe multiverse
                 Active apt sources in file:
    /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
                deb http://packages.linuxmint.com rafaela main upstream
    import
                deb http://extra.linuxmint.com rafaela main
                deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main
    restricted universe multiverse
                deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty-updates main
    restricted universe multiverse
                deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-security
    main restricted universe multiverse
                deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ trusty partner
                 Active apt sources in file:
    /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pmjdebruijn-darktable-release-trusty.list
                deb
    http://ppa.launchpad.net/pmjdebruijn/darktable-release/ubuntu trusty
    main
                deb-src
    http://ppa.launchpad.net/pmjdebruijn/darktable-release/ubuntu trusty

                Active apt sources in file:

  * I ran a simulated update:
    ~ $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --reinstall install darktable -s

This resulted in (sorry, in German)

But I still don't see if and what backports are to be installed.
Well, I hope someone will jump in here and help you. I cannot read German
and have never used apt-get and have really no idea for your post.

gud luk,
well, I did one more test: deleted the backport repository once again, did a refresh and ran the test again.
Result was completely the same.

So chances are

 * Backports are not really needed any more for the final 2.0 release (?)
 * Linux Mint integrated Ubuntu Backports in their incremental updates
   from Mint 17 to 17.1, 17.2 and finally 17.3 (?)

Perhaps I will try update to dt 2.0 on one of my machines without backports later and have a look if there are some problems ...
