Good morning!
I have a couple of hours available to investigate while at work today. Now
I tried to rename my .config/darktable folder and thus start from scratch
with a clean config and empty library.
-Started DT, imported the second image example (church), opened in Darkroom
(DR), back to Lighttable (LT), close DT, open again. *No problem*.
-Started DT, imported the whole folder, containing several CR2, tif and xmp
files, but NOT the first example from Gimp (had deleted that one), opened
church example again in DR, back to LT,, close DT, open again, *no problem*.
-Exported new tif of the first example (sunset over a snow covered field)
from Gimp), deleted DT database to start with new db again.
-Started DT, imported the new image, opened in DR, back to LT, close DT,
start DT. DT crashes.
That's my status at the moment. Also, other tif files from Gimp seem to
work fine. I'll elaborate a bit on the history of the files.
The files I have problems with are HDR images merged and tone mapped in
Macrofusion, then further processed in Gimp. Original bracketed tiffs
exported from CR2 with DT. The files that work fine, except from the church
example, which now works, are normal one-exposure images exported from DT,
processed in Gimp and imported into DT.
---------
Ok, now I started with an empty db again and imported several different
tiff files, both old and new, restarting DT between each one. The only one
making trouble is the first example I provided, with the snow covered field.
-Created new HDR image in Macrofusion and processed in Gimp. This one too
makes DT crash. Original from Macrofusion is fine.
-New Gimp file from one exposure, works fine.
-New Gimp file from Macrofusion, exported without any processing, DT
crashes.
-Created HDR in LuminanceHDR, exported tiff, imported in Gimp, exported
tiff, imported in DT, all fine.
*Apparent conclusion:*
Only files from Gimp containing material that has been exported from
Macrofusion cause problems. Therefore it is not likely that this is
primarily a DT problem. Macrofusion has not been updated since well before
the problems started, but Gimp has, and DT too. This gives us three
possibilities:
1-Gimp interprets files from Macrofusion differently than before.
2-DT has changed the way it interprets files from Gimp in a way that does
not allow for content originating from Macrofusion
3-Both of the above.
I am not taking ino account the behaviour of underlying libraries here,
such as libtiff, since that goes beyond my competence. It also seems like
there are differences in how the apps treat tiff files, and that one or
more may not follow the tiff standard completely. The thing that confuses
me the most is that these problematic files work fine for some people and
not for others.
This is how far I can get now. Hope it helps to narrow the problem down.
