2 modules doing what?

If you want one module for the shadows, and one for the highlights, then
you can already do that: just create two instances.

Also, note that there are many alternatives to shadows & highlights:

* tone mapping (usually too strong, but you can mitigate this with ~50%
  opacity blending)

* equalizer with coarse luma contrast reduced

* low-pass filter with negative contrast, 0 saturation, and "overlay"
  blending mode.

In difficult situations, it usually works well to use a bit of several
techniques instead of just one.
